A DESPERATE SPORTS CITY

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Oh how sports fans of the city of Atlanta yearn for days of old.

Well maybe not days of old but definitely days of recent memory..

In today’s AJC 1st year Braves GM Frank Wren says 90 loses is not acceptable for the Atlanta ball club who won 14 straight division titles beginning in 1991. Now the team formerly known as America’s Team is looking to revive those old winning ways & they’re starting right at the heart of the team… PITCHING!!!!

The Braves once had the most feared pitching rotation in the history of the league, when you think of names like Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux, Avery, Neagle, Pena, Bedrosian, & Wohlers you’ve to ask yourself how did we get away from what made us the envy of the league for over 14 seasons?? Well I can sum it up for those of you that have no clue…. Ownership… Bottom line..

When Ted Turner owned the club spending money for quality players was nothing… He sold out to Time Warner who knew absolutely nothing about running a professional sports team & the proof is in the pudding…

We now have another new owner Liberty Media who seems to understand in order to win in this league you’ve got to spend money!!!! Next season expect the Braves payroll to expand from 92 million this season to 100 million next season…

Oh by the way did I mention the Braves are in the hunt for 2 dominant starting pitchers & a power hitting outfielder???

Do chicks still dig the long ball????

Weekend Woes

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Was it just me or was this weekend one of the worst ever for Georgia sports fans????

The breaking news earlier last week that legendary UGA announcer Larry Munson was retiring effective immediately should have been a sign of things to come for this past weekend…..

Did the Dawgs host their own funeral???

Bet your bottom dollar they did!!! Coach Mark Richt & all of his antics finally caught up with him on Saturday in the form of a 41-30 spanking at the hands the University of Alabama Crimson Tide.. Richt called for a black-out of Sanford Stadium on Saturday and obviously the team blacked-out right at the opening kickoff & didn’t wake up until it was too late.. Earlier last week Richt was quoted as saying “he was going to a funeral” well I guess he wasn’t lying because the Tide buried the Dawgs with no problem..

The former #1 ranked Dawgs find themselves checking in at #11 in this weekend USA Today Top 25.. However, I’m not counting the Dawgs out, if they were to run the table & not lose another game this season, there is a very good chance that they could be in contention for the National Championship. Remember LSU lost 2 games last season and ended up winning the whole thing.. Go Dawgs!!!!!

The Falcons lose another one on the road

The Dirty Birds proved once again on yesterday that they don’t have what it takes to be considered one of the elite teams in the NFC.. Jake Delhomme(294 yds, 2tds), Muhsin Muhammad(147yds, 1td) & Steve Smith(96yds, 1td) made the Falcons defense look like the Junior Varsity team at your local high school.. The run game was completely obsolete as was the pass game Matt Ryan was only 21 of 41 passing.

On the bright side we haven’t had to witness either of the loses here at the Ga. Dome where the Falcons are 2-0.. This weekend the Birds head to Green Bay to face the 2-2 Packers. Look for Aaron Rodgers to exploit Falcons  secondary as did Jake Delhomme on yesterday..

Is it too early for fans to start questioning this new look team?? Does anyone miss Mike Vick yet??

The Braves wrap it up….

The Braves wrapped up the 2008 season on yesterday.. Who could have predicted that a season that started with so much promise could have turned out so disastrous??? After several years of no post season play, the reunion of Tommy G. & Smoltzy had lots of Braves fans yearning for the days of old.. However all the Braves were able to accomplish was their worst record 72-90 since the 1990 season when they were a dismal 65-97..

The one bright spot for the Braves was the stellar performance of Chipper Jones who won the NL batting title on yesterday.. Batting .364 for the season, Chipper has proved that even at 36 years old he is still one of the most feared batters in the league..
